In a new financial report released by Nintendo detailing their performance in the market for April-December 2020, it has revealed that the Switch has already outsold the 3DS. The Switch has so far sold 79.87m units worldwide so far, beating 3DS’ 75.94m units sold in its lifetime. For reference, the 3DS has been in the market since 2011.
The report also indicates that the Switch Lite alone is very close to outselling the Wii U. The Switch has so far sold 13.53m units, which is very likely to beat Wii U’s 13.56m lifetime sales.
Software sales have also been a major contributor to Nintendo’s enormous growth in the past year. Between the period of April to December 2020, the most sold Nintendo software was Animal Crossing: New Horizon, selling 19.41m units during that period and taking its lifetime sales to 31.18m.
Sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are still going strong, as Nintendo sold 8.64m units during the same period, taking its lifetime sales to 33.41m units. Animal Crossing was a major hit for the Switch, with the game becoming the second-most sold software in Switch’s history, despite releasing less than a year ago.
There have been talks about Nintendo releasing an updated version of the Switch, with a hardware boost to lift its capabilities. This would allow Nintendo to compete with news releases from their competitors; the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X and S.
Reports have indicated that Nintendo have no plans to release a “Switch Pro” any time soon, and the numbers above are a good indication of that. It is clear that Nintendo are doing very well in the market, even outperforming their competitors in many spaces.
The current technology market is also very unstable right now, with COVID-19 causing disruption in the supply and demand chain for many products. The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are particularly facing stock shortages, and neither Sony nor Microsoft have been able to meet the high demands for the new systems. This may be due to changes in the working environment at factories responsible for making these products, and one can make the same expectation about a potential new system from Nintendo as well. For now, Nintendo seems to be doing well and there doesn’t appear to be any need for change.
The future looks good for Nintendo as well, with a remake of Super Mario 3D World due for release later this month, and games like Monster Hunter Rise and Breath of the Wild 2 expected to be released soon, money will keep flowing into the Nintendo coffer with any sign of stopping. The Nintendo themed section in Universal Japan called Super Nintendo World is due to open on February 4 as well, which should also broaden their income source.
