As part of a presentation on their earnings for Q3 of 2020, Sony announced that they have sold a total of 4.5m units of PlayStation 5 as of the end of December. For reference, the PS5 was released on November 12 2020, so that number covers sales for just over 6 weeks.
Based on the numbers, the PlayStation 5 is well on its way to beat the PlayStation 4’s sales for the first 3 months. The PlayStation 4 was released in November 2013 and reached 5.3m units sold within the first 3 months. We expect this number has been beaten already, with data for the last month missing.
Sony has been struggling to meet demands for the PlayStation 5, with stocks constantly running dry. Sony is hoping to sell 3 million more units by the end of fiscal year 2021 (which would be April). It will be interesting to see if Sony are able to deliver on this target, but if they are able to supply there is no doubt that systems will be flying off the shelves given the demand.
Aside from PS5 sales, the earnings report also showed a growth in PlayStation Plus members, with a rise of 1.5m new subscribers in Q3 2020. Data also showed 87% off all PS5 users have subscribed to PS Plus.
