In an announcement earlier today, Disney announced it is bringing several of the properties it acquired through the Fox merger to its streaming platform. Under the banner titled ‘STAR’, Disney will be introducing shows such as X-Files, Buffy, Lost, 24, and more, and movies such as Deadpool and Die Hard to its very popular streaming service Disney+. This is widely seen as the first step in many in Disney’s plan to blend all its properties under one umbrella.

What is STAR? STAR is one of the many brands that was under 20th Century Fox before the Disney merger. Many in the Western market may not have heard of it as its presence was almost exclusively in the Asian entertainment sector, namely India and China. STAR, much like many of its Fox equivalents, transferred under Disney following the merger.
Not only is Disney bringing many Fox properties over to Disney+ under the banner of ‘STAR’, but there is an understanding that the ‘STAR’ banner will be seen as a way of introducing shows that are targeted more towards a mature audience. Almost all content in the Disney+ library is family-friendly content, but it seems with the introduction of the ‘STAR’ banner that will likely change soon. With the introduction of properties such as Deadpool, Die Hard, Atlanta, and Family Guy, it's clear Disney is trying to introduce content that caters to a mature audience to its streaming platform.
One can only wonder about the implication of this announcement. It can be said that the full effect of the Disney-Fox merger is finally bearing fruit now, with Disney+ being at the fore-front of broadening the level of content it offers. The introduction of more mature content can also be seen as a way of Disney relaxing its very pro-family friendly content. This could potentially pave the way to shows like Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia being brought to the streaming platform as well, which is perhaps the most non-Disney show out there. Other properties from Disney could be produced under the banner of ‘STAR’ that are more aimed at adults, such as Marvel and Star Wars shows.
Shows under the 'STAR' banner are scheduled to go live on 23rd February 2021.
